The third son of French sculptor, Jean Baptiste Moreau, Auguste Moreau (1834-1917) was proof that talent does indeed run in families. Along with his brother, acclaimed sculptor Mathurin, Auguste Moreau initiated himself into sculpture at a young age, and likely studied at one of the acclaimed art schools in Paris, such as “École des Beaux-Arts.” In 1861, he made his debut at the famed Paris Salon where he exhibited regularly until his death. In keeping with the Moreau clan aesthetic, Auguste Moreau focused on pastoral scenes and allegory in the natural, graceful style exemplified in this gilt and patinated bronze figure, “Le Char D’Aurore,” which translates to “The Chariot of Aurore.” The airy, sensual figure represented here is likely Aurora, the Roman goddess of the dawn.
