Luis Cruz Azaceta, Still Life – 500 Years of Colonialism

Painting rendering of the cross, sword, and book

According to some legends, the Taínos, the dominant indigenous group then inhabiting the Caribbean islands, poisoned themselves by eating dirt and unprocessed cassava juice in order to avoid the consequences of the Spanish conquest. In his large-scale painting, Luis Cruz Azaceta alludes to some of these consequences in his graphic still life rendering of the cross, sword, and book.
