50 Years of Presenting and Preserving Latinx and Latin American Culture – at El Museo del Barrio

Luis Cruz Azaceta, Still Life - 500 Years of Colonialism

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, El Museo del Barrio presents “Culture and The People: El Museo del Barrio, 1969-2019“.

The museum is dedicated to presenting and preserving Latinx and Latin American art and culture, and this two-part exhibit features selections from the Permanent Collection and a timeline contextualizing the history of the institution with related archival materials.

Their collection has over 8,000 objects from across the U.S., Latin America, and the Caribbean.

AmNewYork has named this exhibit one of the “Best art exhibits to see at NYC museums right now“.

This anniversary also launches their ongoing Oral History Video Project featuring art historians, artists, former staff, and academics speaking on the importance of El Museo del Barrio for the Puerto Rican, Latinx, and Latin American communities in New York City and beyond.

On view until September 29th.
