Rene Lalique "Inseparables" glass clock, c. 1932, Paul Stamati Gallery

René Lalique (1860-1945), although world renowned as a glassmaker, produced an astonishingly wide range of objects in varied mediums from jewelry to chandeliers to mirrors and beyond. Lalique perfected use of opalescent glass as seen in the beautiful glass clock, molded with two pairs of budgerigars perched on a prunus blossom, above. Already recognized as one of the foremost names in Art Nouveau jewelry by 1890, Lalique began to make a name for himself in the Art Deco style in the 1920s.

Displaying an extraordinary ability to match a high rate of production with a consummate level of innovation and quality, Lalique created a large body of work that is exhibited in museums all over the world, private collections, public venues such as St. Matthew’s Church (also known as Lalique’s Glass Church) in the country of Jersey. The gorgeous amber colored glass chandelier above, molded with clear domes and radiating chevrons is denotative of his unique vision in glass. Paul Stamati Gallery can be reached here.
