A highlight among the many gems recently opened at The Metropolitan Museum of Art is “Sultans of Deccan India, 1500-1700: Opulence and Fantasy” (April 20-July 26, 2015), a landmark exhibition of over 200 of the best artworks from private, public, and royal collections of classical Deccan, which was one of the most lavish cultural crossroads of the antique world. The first museum showcase of the empire, New York Times calls it a “beautiful, sometimes heart-rending show,” which reveals the ways in which Deccani devotion to sumptuous beauty in part led to its downfall. A perfect time to see the show is this Sunday, May 17, in conjunction with The Met’s newest festival, Senses of Springtime: Celebrate India!, which features music from classical masters, a Bollywood dance workshop, and traditional Indian cooking, as well as plenty of opportunity to wander through the lost splendors of Deccan.
