As is always the case in New York City, there are more “must-see” art exhibits this year than there is time to view them. It’s hard to choose but given our predilection for the past, we recommend these three exhibitions that highlight the past of our own storied city.
Madeline in New York, New-York Historical Society
In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the beloved classic, Madeline, New-York Historical Society is honoring the stalwart little heroine with an exhibition of over 90 original artworks from her creator, Ludwig Bemelmans. Madeline in New York: The Art of Ludwing Bemelmans is on view July 02, 2014 – October 19, 2014.
Garry Winogrand, The Metropolitan Museum of Art
One of the most highly anticipated photography exhibitions of the year, Gary Winogrand at The Metropolitan Museum of Art (on view June 27–September 21, 2014) is the first retrospective of this major chronicler of New York City life from the 1950s through the 1980s. Considered one of the most influential street photographers of the century, Winogrand truly captured life as it was.
Mac Conner: A New York Life, Museum of the City of New York
While this exhibition doesn’t technically open in the fall, it’s hard to think of a show this year more illustrative of a certain New York past than McCauley (“Mac”) Conner’s energetic hand-painted illustrations of ads from the 1950s. Mac Conner: A New York Life is on view at the wonderful Museum of the City of New York Sept 10, 2014 – Jan 11, 2015.
