A brooch made for Daisy Buchanan: In the style of Art Deco, platinum over 14K gold, with a large central citrine, surrounded by sapphires and diamonds, American, circa 1920-1930. Clifford Baron Gallery.
The last line of F. Scot Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby reads “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” It’s a truth the fashion and vintage arts worlds can attest to as 1920s enthusiasm reaches a fever pitch with the release of Baz Lurhman’s glittering new film adaption of the classic American story. Art Deco design originated in France but found its true home in America. Fitzgerald’s ultra-fashionable milieu found its perfect expression in the “Jazz Age” style (a term, incidentally, coined by Fitzgerald himself). Opulence confined within stark patterns, a decadent eye turned ever to the future–the attitude of Art Deco rang through the American consciousness in a way that reverberates today. We’re not immune to “Gatsby” fever either; see some of our favorite Art Deco pieces from our galleries here and more on our Pinterest board.
